The Prime Minister’s 2017 Closing the Gap report was released on 14th February 2017 and identified many key areas of health and wellbeing in which Australia is not meeting their goals for Indigenous Australians.
In response to this most recent report, the ABC and SBS have released their own commentary of the findings. In a Closing the Gap report card, the ABC highlights that Australia is failing to meet their commitment to Indigenous Australians in the areas of:
- Life expectancy
- Child mortality
- Reading and writing
- School attendance
- Early education
The only area in which Australia is on track is in supporting Indigenous Australians to finish Year 12 qualifications. About 62 per cent of Indigenous students finished year 12 or equivalent in 2014-15, compared to 86 per cent of non-Indigenous Australians.
The Closing the Gap website supports the communication of the report findings for different audiences and includes written summaries, specific details of each chapter of the report, and an accompanying video to communicate the core messages of the report.
